IM Language Improves Grammar and Vocabulary!!

People all over the blogosphere say that development of improper language used in IM and e-mails has resulted in adversely influencing the grammar of children.

There are two schools of thought on this issue. What is your opinion? Do you oppose the IM language? Or are you of the opinion that IM language is not the downfall of written language? Please let me know and give your valuable opinion.

I am planning to write a detailed article on this subject (from a child’s point of view, of course) after conducting a comprehensive study within a month’s time. Therefore, your opinion on this shall be highly appreciated.

Wats ur thought, huh? U shld tell me abt it pleaseeeeeeeee! He…..he…. gr8 topic isn’t it?? Waitng fr ur ansrs……..lol! bb.

I have also put a poll survey on the left side of this blog to get your response. You are requested to vote on this issue and ALSO give your opinion in detail by making comments below.

That's a great thought, Meghna. I'm sure you will conduct an in-depth study and inform us shortly. I'm waiting.

I'm of the opinion that using inappropriate language by kids in IM and while chatting and through e-mails will be harmful. Their english will become corrupted. Though their speed of communication may increase compared to our adults, it is surely going to influence badly on their language. I have been observing recently that kids of today are being highly distorted in their language concepts. Add to it, declining reading habits (due to the increase of computers & TV usage) has also effected very badly. I'm sure that there may be opposition to my points of view which I'm very delighted to hear!

Wish you come up with an impartial study. Though some elders have studied this effect and put their points forward, I am is highly delighted that a child is conducting a survey on this and I'm waiting for the outcome. EAGERLY! Well done...

Interesting topic. Language has evolved and I'm sure it will continue to do so.
Think we will have a pattern of speech for each situation. Danny

I just consider IM language the future. We are moving forwards in a new medium, in a new way of communicating. For the moment there are no rules yet but when more and more people start to use it, it will become regulate like everything.
For your big article, just look into the beginning of printing, with Caxton and stuff. No rules then, various ways of spelling.

PS: For a 12-year old, you're picking very interesting subjects and stuff. Back then I was just playing in the garden. :D

Plato, in one of his dialogs, warned about the terrible effects on education and thought that would result, if writing became used widely.

His dialog was written in the Greek language of his day, and comes to us as "Phaedrus," in translation into English (and quite a few other languages).

The point is this: language changes; and technology changes language.

Change happens.

I'm concerned about the ideas that are sometimes expressed in IM language - and in the more standard forms, too. That's a very different matter.

I neither disapprove of, nor dislike, IM language. As this comment shows, I'm much more comfortable with more conventional models of communication, but that's my preference.

I suspect that IM is not as nuanced as colloquial English, but there's no doubt that it has a higher transmission rate. That makes it very useful for superficial, quick messages.

So: No, I don't think that IM will bring about the downfall of the English language (or any other).

I don't think it will lead to the destruction of civilization.

I also don't think it will be very useful for expressing subtle, detailed, or poetic thoughts, but I could be wrong about that.

A very appropriate and emerging topic you have taken up. I am sure you will conduct a good study.

I think that by using IM language, kids have become faster in this fast world. There is no harm in it provided they do not use them in their school works, examinations and the like.

Again, Good topic, Meghna!

Geat topic and looks like
people have an opinion.
Wow! A few post are very
long. O.K. I remember this
book that was called - Breaking
the Code For Parents? A
girl about age 12, wrote
the book herself. I have not read this book only watched her on TV.
(over 1 year ago?) Could be
something interesting in the book.
Also, congrats about Nick at http://KidReviewer.com adding
you to his blogroll.
Talk to you soon,
