Killer Maths

M- Mental

A- Ability

T- To

H- Handle

S-Strenuous Sums

Yea....that's what maths aka mathematics actually stands for. It's a deadly ghost, a hound that troubles me in all my nightmares, which usually consists of ghastly numbers jumping around with me trembling in the center.

It looks as if all these numbers and signs (addition +, Subtraction - etc.) are deadly tribal spirits waiting for the right moment to place their poisonous teeth on me when I create a mistake and kill me with their venom.

It's the toughest thing in life and most difficult. Yes, mathematics is. I just finished my exams, as you people know, and maths was the toughest of all. I did not get a wink of sleep the night before the math exam, ummm.... I should say I was afraid to sleep or I'd have another of those deadly math nightmares.

I do not know why a student needs to do maths. Wake up teachers!!!! This is the 21st century. The technological advancement is so very huge and human life is addicted to technology.

So why in this modern world, with various calculators, high-tech puzzle solvers, net helps and computers does a student need to do maths after all? Can he not survive in this world without it? and with the help of all these gadgets?

I am doing english, physics, chemistry, biology, geography, history.....but why MATHS??? Arrrgghhhh......I can still remember the day when I sat in the exam hall, scribbling away on sheets.....numbers unknown, calculations mistaken....no idea where the mind was, a math bug bit in the center, head screamed.....but I went on scribbling, afraid to close my eyes or faint!!!

I had a sip glasses of water just to satisfy my parched throat, though it was no respite, I'd say it was strength. I cannot tell you how much relief and sense of satisfaction I felt after submitting away my Mathematics paper, giving it all away for the teacher to bear and mark/grade.

And each year it's like this.....I HATE MATHS guys!!! It's a really really terrible nightmare for me. I cannot stand it....argghhhh :X

So anyone there to give me a suitable reason why I need to do maths....after all, there are so many calculators and stuff, why can I not just use them and be glad???

P.S- This post is in fond memory of my brain which died after remembering that tomorrow I'm gonna be shown the math paper. Before dying, it told me to apologize for posting so late and not commenting, all due to some movies I'd to catch up on and books I had to read.

May my brain lie in peace till the killer, mathematics is caught!

this only makes me laugh out loud...
exactly what i used to think while doin vector calculus or geometry ...

Well in my work killer maths is exactly correct. Maths is an incredibly important part of being a fish farmer; yet my students who I train to be fish farmers struggle with maths because they often don't understand the simplest of maths problems.

End result if you get the maths wrong in our industry -- someone ends up killing the fish. Definitely not the way to go.

There are a lot of jobs were maths is very important. So keep up the hard work :)

Poor little girl! I think you will have a good conversation with my daughter, as she is also being massacred by math.

But here's the kicker! Math is not just teaching us to compute, calculate and whatever painful activities to our brains.

It teaches us how to apply logic on the fastest time, even without anything except the brain. Math is everywhere, and we cannot avoid it.

Yes I agree, my dear Meghna. It is the 21th century and easy gadgets are easy to reach but don't you forget it is all because of math and some nerds around.

While I understand your pain as your virtual friend, math is logic and it is logic that we also use when we write...make sense?!

Since you are a good writer, you are good in logic. Therefore, you are also good in math.

Algebra for me is the best, and worded problems are my best friends.

By the way, I think I already told you before that I am a licensed engineer. Does this also mean I am a good writer?

With so much care,

maths is not my piece of cake too...it's 2 c's that do (chess & chemistry)...hope you did well in ur exam

Adi

Oh No! My megahuge comment got deleted! I'll have to write the whole thing again!

Meg, again this is REALITY. Is there ANYTHING we can do to stop schools teaching maths. I get really screwed in maths all the time. I don like maths and i dont fancy my teacher also. Maths is just boooooring.
'To Albert Einstein, schools were like barracks and teachers like military commanders.'
'Salim ali dropped out of college due to his intense dislike for mathematics.'
There are many people who hate maths, Meg. But you really cant ignore the subject. I know it's unfair, but for almost any job, you need to excel in maths.
I really don't have any useful tips for you, but want to tell you that it's better to have little interest. The calculators you talk about were also made by people who were experts in the subject. Just.... just... relax. Let the marks come. You can't do anything about it. Anyways, don't worry, you may not have done soooo bad.

Adi

PS- may your brain rest in peace...)

Meghna

@ Vandita- Ah.....putting salt on the wound eh?? Guess mos of us don't like it!!

Meghna

@ Adi- I guess you say correctly!!! I think I'll have to bear with it forever;..... though I don't get why!! There are calculators! Hey....

Meghna

@ Chessyman- Cool....for me its bio there :)

Meghna

@ Guadian- "It is the 21th century and easy gadgets are easy to reach but don't you forget it is all because of math and some nerds around."

I guess I get the whole thing through this....convey my regards to ur daughter for going through the same trauma!!

Meghna

@ Sue- Oh.....I guess I'll have to bear with it...arghhh :(

Thanks for this cool explanation!!

Cяystal

To everybody=

Anythign tht this girl writes abt studies is pureply coincidental.
She's okay in maths, not tht bad.
Duh! :P

LOL ! You are so like me !!

I was petrified of maths big time !

Dunno how I passed all thru school - UG (the mega red horned bull kinda maths) - and grads (think of this as 10 red bulled horned ready to charge n you're in an open field with a red langoti).....without flunking even once !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

OK, I just realised I aint providing much help here..just chuck it ok. All wil be gud cutie pie.
muah.

Solitaire

Hahaha!! I remember asking the same things when I was in school. I survived. You will too.

I don't know what the world uses to calculate but I use a damn calculator and I'm proud of it.

What's the use of technology if you're not going to use it?

Why strain our brain?

Meghna

@ aayu- huh! Thanks :P

Meghna

@ Cindy di- Wat say, eh?? Doesn't sound that good....with me wanting to take science...Shit!!

Muahhhhh.....

Meghna

Meg, could you help me a little and tell me about this new post of mine?

Thanx

Oh, Maths can be sooo difficult! This is what I think of M.A.T.H.S.

or

Multiple Aches To Head Surroundings

or is it

Mild Activities That Help Success?

Sahefa

i liked the abstract u made out of maths
tomorrow is my monthly test of maths...wish me luck yaar.

Anu

welcome to a math hating club...i used to memorize the steps to get to the final result, that way atleast i would get marks for "Steps" :D!! Dont worry, your brain will revive in a few days after a lot of therapeutic tv watching and book reading...

Meghna

@ Adi- Dont worry yaar....I'll be there soon :)

Meghna

@ Sofia- LOL! I completely agree....thanks for sharing :)

Meghna

@ Sahefa- oooo....sad!! But my best wishes with you!! :D

Meghna

@ Anu- That's exactly what I do!!! But humari teacher steps ke marks bhi uda leti hain yaar.....wat to do??

Zawan

The whole year was running smooth but now I'm stuck with equations.
i read about the guy that created equations and all I can say is why? why did he create this weird thing; obviously to make us suffer in school
at least whoever's math theory shouldn't be compulsory at school
math shouldn't be compulsory
like Meghna, i think you want to be a writer or sth when u grow up, what does that have to do with math??

Manick

Hi Meghna,

I always take Maths as Challenging. It gives sufficient food for my brain.

By the way, thanks for installing my "Blog Statistics widget" on your blog. Thanks for your review on StumbleUpon too.

Meghna

@ Zawan- Yea....equations are a pain in the back too! I have exactly the same thought as you :)

Meghna

@ manick- I'm grateful to you for the widget....maths is good for the brainies :)

Stephie

Hi Meghna,
I hate maths. I just don't understand some excersises and that's horrible when you have tests. Hope you did well :)

hey I luv maths!!
why u should know maths, lots of reasons for this??

1.this whole world that you see is vaguely based some ratios, as you read in The Da Vinci Code:)
2.Seriously, basic computer logic is in binary, 0&1, so you want to do anything realted to computers maths is the basic for it.
3. Maths test our analytical abilities, how logically ,step by step we analyse the problem.
4. If you wanna crack any of the competitive exams be it engineering, medical ,CAT knowledge of maths is imperative
5. Solving maths questions and puzzles keeps the mind agile, you wont get Alzheimer's when you grow old :))

and loads of other reasons too!!!

check out NUMBERS on AXN, you would know the affect of nos. on our lives!!!!

Niranjan

hey meghna,
i don't know why people don't like maths.
i love it.
you must remember me. i am adi's bro. i stopped blogging but i have again. i wrote a cool post. you'll love it dudate(whatever we call it.)

Heart'n'Soul

Uh oh
u really wan a serious answer to tht... cuz i have one...

Anonymous

Meghna, you are very entertaining! May your brain lie in peace, and I hope Mathematics is caught red handed and jailed... I HATE MATHS TOO! It is just a complicated pattern of numbers, pictures, diagrams and puzzles... There is really no need to do maths especially when technology is boosting! I agree. As for reasons to do maths, trust me, my brain stays quiet!
Maths is horrible, no matter how hard you study, there is always something you haven't... I hate it so much! I just wish I could get better at it. How can the Math Wizzes do it? No clue. But I'll tell you something Meghna, between you and me, deep down, we all know Maths is important. How will we teach our children when we grow? How will we calculate our bills? Our payments? In shops, how will we know how much something costs if it is, for example, reduced to 30%?
As much as I hate Maths, I most utterly hesitate to say this... but it is significant in 21st century life. You must admit.
MARVELLOUS POST!
P.S My head always screams "What?" while I do Maths tests, and when I hand it in, I am relieved and calmed. It's all left to the teachers! Let them deal with Maths problems! Get it? LOL
Hugs, Nadine

Priscila

Hi Meghna!
Nice post.
Maths is my worst subject!!!
I survive in the maths class but I prefer English or Biology.

Hi Meghna, I've tagged you to do a meme on my blog.

here's the link: http://btt2.wordpress.com/2008/10/09/book-meme/

i'm sure you'll find it fun to do...
i did it too on my blog

Math is not my subject either, especially when you got an Algebra 2 teacher that is hard on grading and has no remorse. But you need math for engineering for that technology, and you need math for business. You specifically may not need math for the career path you've chosen, (I know I don't) but some people do like engineers for anything need Tigonometry (don't know how to spell it) and Calculus and Business people need Algebraic funcions for graphs.

Anonymous

correction 'Trigonometry'

Meghna

@ Rahul- One diff guy!

1. I know that but what has it got to do with us? Someone who is a symbiologist like Langdon in Da-Vinci, needs it na?

2. That's for right now,....in a year or too, with technology advancing soo much, we'll have computers that do maths better than us!

3. You can do so many other things that help us in that way! and is much more fun! Scramble....etc...

4. Referring to the whole post and above replies....that's what I ask, WHY????

Meghna

@ Niranjan- Hi again....will visit soon :)

Meghna

@ Divi di- Looks like another maths lover on the prowl!

Meghna

@ Nadine- WOW! We are so very similar....lightens my soul after reading your comment... thanks:P

Meghna

@ Priscila- Thanks:) Every student hates Maths!

Meghna

@ Zawan- I hope to do it soon :)

Meghna

@ Shawn- Looks like I too will have to choose a nice career stream like you :P

Thanks for this lovely comment!

Ah, that rare thing... a comment ;-)

I guess we all have classes that we dread and days we fear because of them. Japanese is sort of like that for me, except that we're only three and make fun of the teacher/ourselves all the time.

Guess there is joy to be found in the worst things in your life... although maths - more than almost anything else - is either love it or hate it.

I am afraid that there is nothing to say except accept and endure in this case; but sometimes that in itself is the soundest advice. It's good that you can write about it, because keeping strong emotion locked away is a very, very dangerous thing to do.

Hemanth Potluri

hahahahaah....gud one meghna

wow...i love maths lol :P..the class topper always in maths only ofcourse :).

urs...hemu..

Stephie

Hi Meghna,
Thanks fir the comment and glad you liked the chapter!
I'll try Zawan's opinion about adjectives. Thanks for giving me advices too!
Keep in touch,

WOW! That really caught my expression you know!!! Great acrostic poem also! And maths and technology give us a better future! And thanks for that comments! Missed ya tooo!]

Meghna

@ Aayu- Will try to do it soon yaar :P

Meghna

@ Aron- I guess all you say is correct....
"Guess there is joy to be found in the worst things in your life... although maths - more than almost anything else - is either love it or hate it. "

I guess I'll endure it for 4 more years!

Meghna

@ Hemu- LOL! Another topper???? ARGHHHH :X

Mere blog ke readers sab toppers kyon hain?

Meghna

@ Stephi- Great! adjectives would do good to the story :P

Meghna

@ Norma- Thanks :) I guess they do....LOL!
Keep visiting and stop missing :P :D

Jeevan

am another one who afraid on maths, thus we need to know maths to handle when there is nothing object to calculate on our own. don’t know who well maths is important today to think and see no way we have to learn at least basic mathematics.

Meghna

@ Jeevan- I guess I have to agree to your wise words :)

Hey from USA

I totally agree!! I usually do really good in school, but this year I'm really struggling with math. I like the way you described it-- "deadly tribal spirits waiting for the right moment to place their poisonous teeth on me when I create a mistake and kill me with their venom." That is EXACTLY how I feel! I want to become a singer/actress when I'm older, so I can have other people do my math for me. Ha ha.

P.S. check out my website-- mallorie109.edublogs.org

You might find the power of numbers too difficult to accept but trust me, I have been with this subject for the last 10 years and even now- I find no prosthetic to it.

And,NO- I have not cut my ties with you.Just that I am under reconstruction..

Meghna

@ Mishra- awwwwww......u broke me dude...I thought I was right in beleiving that Maths is not for me :(

Anyways thanks....and you bet, I'm glad to hear that....

Loads of love for ur job :)

I know how you feel Meghnak, I don't think I've encountered many mathematic issues since I left school, apart from basic Arithmatic (which counts for very little in Maths exams)or percentages.

As to Logs, Trig, and all that, nearly always you will leave it behind when you leave school.

Meghna

@ Mark- WOW! Am I not glad to hear that dud??? LOL!

:P

Nitzee

Enjoyable. coincidentally, my younger sister has an essay on the same topic here: http://slipoftongue.blogspot.com/2007/11/my-mathematical-journey.html . She doesnt surf much, but I have pointed her to your blog, hope she comes by soon.

Meghna

@ Nitzee- I am so glad to read this! I'll visit her soon too!
