Cake-less Birthdays!

Cake-less birthdays lead to weightless children!

Cakes and birthdays have always been like synonyms, haven’t they? And what’s the first thing that comes to mind when you think of a Birthday? Yeah, cake, of course…ummm….yummmyyy…..my mouth waters even at the thought of it!

But I learnt recently, that a school in Wellington, New Zealand has banned children from bringing cake to school on birthdays! Students of Oteha Village primary school, situated in North Auckland have been informed that they can happily celebrate their Birthdays but without the involvement of cakes! Their cakes should remain at home.

And all these measures have been taken due to Government’s new healthy eating guidelines. It is said that the ministry is on a fat-reducing campaign in which they have made bizarre laws for the unhealthy eating habits in New Zealand schools.

Whooop…. I’m glad this has not been done in my school! birthdays are the only times when pupils can enjoy delicacies with their friend amidst the peer pressure for studies. Don’t you think this is wrong? Childhood is a time to eat and have fun and not to diet or reduce weight, eh? I would love to know what you all think!

Hi Meghna, wow, I didn't know! Thta's really unfair because children have to enjoy this time, childhood, by celebrating their birthdays with their friends, etc.
Great post! Very Informative!

Cinderella

K..no sweat..they can have it at their homes at the party....

I like your blog girl...you have a variety of things to talk about...

Meghna, they were discussing something similar to this at my children's school when I went to a meeting about their breakfast program. I think they mean well but should make an exception for a traditional special occasion.

Meghna

Hi Stephie,
I agree, It is unfair because of course, children need to enjoy their special day!

Meghna

Hi Cinderella,
Hey...but every child does not have the liability to go to the parties due to home-work, studies, family etc. What about them? Don't you think it's unfair?
Thanks and I do it because I myself am interested int these things :P

Meghna

Hi sandra,
I'm glad you read this then! Hearing my views, I hope you all will change the decisions. The children shouldn't be allowed to bring cakes daily to school but not even on their Birthdays...hey...that's not fair!

Occasional Brilliance

i read about this in the newpaper... and i see you've labelled this post under bizarre... i think thats very appropriate... i cant imagine birthdays without cake and i agree with you whole heartdly on the fact that birthdays are the one day for total indulgance... :)

Meghna

Hi Bubbles,
I'm glad you agreed. Birthdays are for everyone to enjoy, (especially kids!)and not the time to care about health and diet :P

lol...donno what i will do with out stuff to eat...my policy...eat as much as want and exercise to burn it all away!

Your Blog is really informative ! Every time I read, I learn something new ! Cheers to that ! :)

Well, about the topic...Cutting the cake on a birthday is one of the most special moments of the year ! How can anyone miss that ? :O

RecycleCindy

Well, I don't know if I agree or disagree. I know that sweets are a problem for many children these days but to ban birthday cakes? That may be just a bit overboard.

Meghna

Hi Vishesh,
That's it! That's the mantra of every child, I believe but these school authorities have disintegrated it. And I am glad you had the same opinion :P

Meghna

Hi Priceless,
I'm glad to hear this. Usually it was I who gained knowledge after reading blogs by you and other elder people out there! I'm glad you liked it :)
I agree, cutting a cake and blowing a candle are almost synonyms to birthdays, aren't they? :P

Meghna

Hi CIndy,
Hey...all children 'are' addicted to sweets (is that a crime?) but to ban them even on Birthdays is a really bad thing!

Shady

For heaven's sake...B'day comes once a year!! The one of the rare moments of their life...this is totally unfair. I think kids should protest against this..

Anonymous

Wow, this does sound ridiculous! But its not too bad... see everyone can have their cakes at home. And moreover in some cases rivalry over who brings the best cake can be avoided - leading to better friendships perhaps!

There's a positive in everything... just look for it ;-)

Cяystal

Hey Meghz,
Hatt pagal..
Cakes have been banned in our school as well..so NO sighs of relief
*DAAAAAMN*

I hafta say..nice blog once again buddy ..
*Cheers*
Aayu

Meghna

Hi Shady,
Yup, that's what I said. The children should certainly protest :P

Meghna

Hi Harshad,
That's a new aspect for this story that you told me. Okay, I agree it has a positive side but the negative side is much more appealing to the kids! :P

Meghna

Hi Aayushi,
Hya gal, cakes can be brought to our school atleast in the tiffin. Of course we cannot bring the whole box.
LOL!
Thanks for the compliments :P

HART (1-800-HART)

Well .. I still expect birthday cake and/or birthday ice cream cake on my birthday!

But, I can totally see this making sense. Unfortunately, it does sound sad for the birthday boy or girl - but, think of the parents of the other children - they don't know what other people are putting in their foods and giving away to kids. You have to lean on the side of caution some times. Also, some parents go out of their way to give their kids healthy foods and lunches and theoretically, there could be someoneone's birthday every single day. That's not good for healthy eating!

Kelvy

megz..well i cant really complain coz the birthday kids do get to eat cake at home and they can call their friends over for celebrations at home...so i reaaly dont think that banning cake in school is a huge prob..well u can always take sweets na ;)....well i guess its good to hav healthy eating to some extent coz health problems are on the rise now and is a very serious issue...and children basically do not eat anything healthy in most of the foreign schools....

Kelvy

i have heard that in kuwait also most school canteens were told to stop stocking soft drinks like pepsi, coke etc and also unhealthy chips and stuff... that is ok i feel if they r provided with more healthy, but yummy food

Meghna

Hi Hart,
Oh, now I've slowly got the idea that this is not so bad after all and is for the good of the children. I suppose I'll have to digest this fact and you've made me understand really well!
Thanks :P

Meghna

Hi Enigma,
I fully agree with you. There are many health problems so schools, students and parents should be cautious. Sweets are actually not a good substitute. Calling kids at home; it isn't necessary every one will come or maybe even parents might decline cakes following the school idea :P

Meghna

Hi Enigma,
Oh...they've done that there too! I love chips too so I don't like this :)

Anonymous

Hi Meghna!
Now that's something to think about. I agree, cakes are the highlights of birthdays!!!
But banning them is really upsetting, because ,yes, childhood comes once in a lifetime, that's why we should make the best of it! But on the other hand, children are getting weight problems which is terrible! So I say that, maybe cakes should be left till home, after all, cake at home is better than NO cake! I hope I haven't criticized!
So, you can still invite your friends over to your place and eat the cake together. Do you agree this is fair?

Thankyou for your comment.
You really don't like dancing? Well, that's different! But I'll leave you to it!After all, it's your choice! ;)
My hobbies have to be reading, writing, dancing and probably playing (computer, games etc)!
I love reading and writing just the same as you. I'm lucky to have someone the same as me!
I'm SO glad that FINALLY someone LOVES reading and writing!!!

Meghna

Hi Nadine,
a very good suggestion but there still remains one problem. Every child cannot come home due to different problems...maybe he/she has to go some place else, or she has to study or any other problem. There is no guarantee that we can enjoy the B'Day cake with everyone, whereas at school we can be certain that we can share our piece of joy with each one of our classmates!

Meghna

Hi nadine,
I actually don't like dancing myself but I like to watch others dancing ;)
I too am glad to find a friend in you :D

broca's area

hmm...cant say..the govnment may be right in their own way!!!

Meghna

HI Pratp,
Aww....that's a real diplomatic answer :P

Meghna

Hi Sourish,
he...he....agreed...they should be beaten and there shouldn't be a ban on them :p
Hope Bahadur's tank reached you to New Zealand....Yeah...they are a bit foolish to do this :P

Meghna

Hi Anoop,
I'm always enjoying my cake Big Bro! yeah..that's the problem...B'Days don't remain B'days actually :p

Anonymous

Hi i'm new here!
But i think they shouldn't ban cakes like that!
Because they should eat proud and be happy!
If you want to visit my blog here it is!

I am Nadine's sister by the way!
lol bye!

Meghna

Hi Norma,
I agree with you! They shouldn't ban cakes...:P
hey...Nadine's sister! Wow! You both are really lucky to have so much talent in the family...Thanks for dropping by and I'll be visiting soon :D

Jeevan

Sharing the cake is the really joy in celebrating birthdays; this is a sweetest habit I wish on every birthday for the cake. In my school days, we only give chocolates alone to mates in class. How about u meghna? :)

Abhinav

recently celebrated my b day without a cakr

Meghna

Hi Abhinav,
Oh dear! Where's the fun then???
Belated Happy Birthday :P

Vanessa

Meghna, come to the US and see some of the lethargic, fat children here and you might change your mind. True, kids should be able to enjoy sweets and not worry about their health/weight, but parents aren't doing their jobs if they're just allowing their children to lounge around all the time playing video games and becoming obese. It's sad.

Meghna

Hi Venessa,
After reading all these comments and especially yours, I understand that the rule has actually been made for the benefit of the children....Thank you so much for making me understand and I hope the parents too do their duty :P

I am a lover of children's literature

Someone has to step up to the plate first, and in this case, be it the government, so be it.

Yes, childhood is a time to enjoy, experience new things and enjoy yummy treats, but they can do that at home. A school is a place to learn, birthday or no birthday. Schools have a moral obligation to teach things other than just the 3 R's, like good nutrition!

If left up to children, they would be eating treats 24 hours per day. As good as treats may taste, they are not exactly good for your health.

As places of learning, good nutrition is an important part of the process; good nutrition promotes clear thinking, something sorely needed in school and everywhere else for that matter!

Nice post.

Childhood is where one anticipates and celebrates their birthday with the maximal innocence and joy.A birthday comes just once a year. The kids eat all sorts of junk throughout the year and that's alright ha?Stupid regulations! :)
