My Eternal Friend

Abha
That night I was sitting in the balcony, sky gazing. The watchman, Shyam Bhaiya, was whistling tunelessly and hitting his stick at the colony gate from time to time.

It was a clear night and the moon was shining bright. The beauty and serenity of the ambience was broken by a sudden whimpering from downstairs.

I hate dogs, I literally do. I hate them to the core. So naturally, I just ignored the howling. I thought Bhaiya would do something. After a fifteen minute break, I returned to the balcony again. The voice was still audible. It struck my mind….I decided to go down and check.

On the way, I hastened by the guard house and saw Shyam Bhaiya dreaming and snoring away to glory…I decided not to wake him up. Just made a face at him and ran on.

There was construction going on in the colony. So the workmen had dug a shallow hole in the ground, which hadn’t been closed. It was pitch dark and I knew the noise was coming from within. It was 11:30 Pm at night so naturally everyone was asleep. I was so stupid and sick, to run down three stories this late at night just to check a stupid dog.

Fortunately, I was wearing my digital clock with a light. I pressed the light button and stooped down and looked into the hole. Pebble like black eyes stared back at me….and then I remembered.

A week ago, my friends at the colony had brought an injured pup and mom back with them. The pair was badly injured as a car had almost run over them. The mother of the small pup died on the way, and the pup, who was just two days old, was left alone.

The children brought it home and gave it milk and food. I watched from a distance. I disliked the pup just at first glance. It was dirty and stinking, all swathed with mud. The black ears poked from the back and a stinky, red, saliva drooling tongue. It was hate, detest, abhor for it, at first sight.

And then the hate strengthened furthermore. My friends forgot me and played with the pup. All their time was devoted to her. I hated it and blamed her for stealing my friends from me.

Back to today, it was the same pup who was staring back at me.

The revulsion strengthened to the limits. I just spat and moved away. It whimpered again.

But this time, don’t know what happened to me. I came back running, stooped the little pup in my hands and gently took it out.

I stared at my pup again and it stared back. Big black eyes looked into mine. The eyes had a depth….a fire….but something was missing. Yes, the love…..the care….the affection….of a mother. I looked at it again, but this time with a different outlook. It stood before me as an orphan. An orphan who had someone right now, but no idea what would happen next. An orphan who looked up to others.

I picked up the dirty and bruised pup in my hands and carried it home. I wiped her well with a damp soft towel. It was gleaming now. It’s bright coat shining in the light. It had a really sweet face that I had ignored before. I boiled some milk and gave it to her in my favorite saucer.

The pup was so small that it could fit into my small drawer. I took it with me, and wrapped her in my mother’s shawl. And then we slept together…..today….and for days to come.

I named her Abha, which means light. For she is the gem of my life now. She is the best friend I have and will ever have!

I always wished to have a small puppy as my best friend but never managed to get one home as no one at home liked pets. I still love playing with dogs whenever I get a chance. You reminded me of my childhood incidence, when we took a small puppy to a vet and got it treated for wounds it was carrying... Ah!!! dogs are cute... simply adore them.

You are an angel girl!!! Take care. God bless both of you.

Hi friend,

Thanks!

PS: Loved the dog.

I am a lover of children's literature

Ah, a sweet story of hate that turned into love! I love dogs personally, and this story reminded me of my own dog, long gone.

My dog was truly my best friend; he loved me even on the days that I didn't quite love him bacl - he was always there, loyal and just wanting to be with me where I was.

He would cry when ever I left, and would jump and dance whenever I took him for a walk.

Unfortunately, the day came when he, at age 11, gotten old, cranky and sick and I had little choice - I had to put him down! I didn't want to do it, but I couldn't allow him to suffer! It was one of the saddest days of my entire life - I remember looking at him looking back at me, as I left him, left him to die! And when he did, a piece of my heart, a very big part of my heart died as well!

To this day, my dog, Mr. Fuzzy by name, is greatly missed. He was a better friend to me than I was to him and I dream of him, now and then, and my heart still breaks, because looking back, he seemed to be more human than many people I know!

I will never forget my wonderful Mr. Fuzzy and my heart will never stop aching, stop longing for him. I miss his big black eyes looking longingly into mind. Even though I had little choice, I still feel guilty having him put down - the pain is such that I promised that I would never, ever own another dog again for I could never endure the pain that I felt and still feel after losing him - my friend to the very end - my dear Mr. Fuzzy! ( I love you Mr. Fuzzy whenever you are?)

that dog is really sweet . Infact all dogs are so sweet , they are indeed man's best friend .

You were very lucky to find her that way . I also had a dog (black labrador) named Caesar . did I luved him...yeah I did ... but since he passed away , I never dared to bring home another one . It took me a long time to recover that loss .

This is a very touching post! I love animals, especially dogs like Abha. So heart-warming!

Animals can teach us so many things that even some humans cant!

The difference between a white, old, fluffy, small dog and a black, young, short furred big dog is coming to Chalola in a matter of time.

But for now, the Empire is rising.

Yours sincerely,
Chalola

Meghna

@ Chalola- LOL! Am off to visit :D

I love animals but from a distance. I wouldnt say I detest them but the sight of dogs licking my feet is not what I relish!;) I had a dog once, a cute lil German Shepherd called "Raven". It died. Guess that explains it all.

Keep writing awesome stuff! I am amazed by your vocabulary skills at such a young age. Cheers! :)

PS You know how genuinely interested I am, in your writing career. I saw that none had pointed out a small mistake. So, I take the liberty to correct it, only to make you better. "Abhor and detest" are verbs, dear. Check out this sentence again.
"It was hate, detest, abhor for it, at first sight."

The above sentence should have noun forms after "It was". Detest doesnt have a noun form but for abhor, it's abhorrence and hatred, for hate.

Happy Blogging! :)

Meghna

@ Rampantheart- Aww....it's so sweet of you to visit. I didn't like that initially but now I love it when Abha does it after I'm home from school :P

Thanks a lot......I'll certainly continue writing :)

Oh! Am really thankful! I wouldn't ever have noticed that. My silliest mistake.....I'll correct it right away.... thanks a ton :P
